Angry Neighbour

Guest Post by Natan Bell

I sleep in a dream, then I wake with a fright
To a thud on the wall and a bark with a bite
I lay and I listen to his cursing and spite
I roll on my side and hug my pillow tight

The screaming and shouting goes on every night
He imagines himself having a fight
He rants and he raves and shows off his might
Ignoring, I sleep as darkness turns light

The next day in the hall, he looks just alright
He even says hi as he passes my right
If he does it tomorrow, maybe I might
Call up the police and speak of his plight

This poem is selected from Nathan Bell’s new book of poems, lyrics and short pieces called “In My Head“.

Natan Bell refelcts on his poem by saying:

“I have lived in two rough buildings since moving into Newcastle. One was a very cheap private rental and I currently live in housing. I have had good relationships with most of my neighbors in these buildings. However, in both there have also been problematic tenants.

Having experienced some of the issues that come with living in accommodation built for poor and mentally troubled people, I can say that it is difficult. The stress some situations have caused me has been intense and I am traumatised from this.

Housing is not a free ride, it can be a nightmare. I have had neighbors assault me, threaten me and break into my apartment. Presently I don’t like to answer the door in case it means trouble.

Throughout all these instances, I have remembered that those people are dealing with serious issues which drive their behaviour and decision making. I advocate for these people to be supported on their journey towards a better life. This poem is about an experience I’ve had with a problem neighbor.”
